Altelium founder, Charley, is one the leading innovators in the global underwriting warranty market. After a successful military career and a degree from Exeter University, in 1983 he entered the insurance industry at Willis Faber’s Reinsurance Division serving European and Lloyd’s of London Market clients. By 1991 he had established Grimston Insurance Services to specialise in designing and implementing bespoke insurance programmes for lenders, financial insurance and reinsurance broking with emphasis on non-traditional coverage. In 1993 he floated with JO Hambro, Conning & Co and Grimston Investments HCG Lloyd’s Investment Trust on the London Stock exchange, the first quoted underwriting vehicle. Over the last 20 years Charley has established the CNC family of companies, focusing on complex indoor and outdoor industrial machinery from a finance and insurance perspective. Having played a key role on the Lloyd’s Corporate Capital Board he is now an active member of the British Standards Institute (BSI) steering group for the manufacture, transportation, service and end-of-life disposal of batteries for electrically propelled vehicles.
Professor Harry Hoster
CTO (Director) and Co-founder of Altelium Ltd and Professor of Energy at Lancaster University
Harry is Chief Technical Officer for Altelium and a co-founder of the company. He is an expert in monitoring and modelling rechargeable batteries, in particular for electric vehicle applications, and Professor of Physical Chemistry and Director of the research centre, Energy Lancaster. Before his time at Lancaster University, he spent five years working as Scientific Director and Principal Investigator at the cross-disciplinary TUM CREATE electric vehicle research programme in Singapore, managing 120 staff.
Co-founder of Altelium and Founder of Helestia
John specialises in insurance solutions with over 25 years’ experience. In addition to his work with Extended Warranty pioneer CNC Asset Ltd, John runs an insurance broking business, Helestia, based in Athens, which is a sister company of CNC and Altelium. He focuses on research-driven insurance products, data management and Insurtech.
CFO of Altelium
Yannis is our Chief Financial Officer; an accomplished professional in the financial sector with more than 12 years’ experience as CFO in a multinational environment. Before that he spent 10 years in corporate banking. He is an ACCA affiliated member, he holds an MSc in Finance and a BSc in Management Science.
Head of Data Science
Our Data Scientist is Judith Elgie, providing insights from the Altelium data sets using data mining, modelling and machine-learning techniques. Judith has over four years of experience working with using large and complex data sets and associated technologies, and has been involved in multiple projects, creating metrics, accessing and cleaning datasets, developing algorithms and visualisations and communicating results.
Head of Predictive Analytics
Plamen is Head of Predictive Analytics at Altelium. He is also a Professor in Intelligent Systems and Director of Research at the School of Computing and Communications, Lancaster University as well as Director of ‘LIRA’ Lancaster Intelligent, Robotic and Autonomous Systems centre. He is a Governor of the International Neural Network Society twice serving as its Vice President, and has extensive experience in the fields of real time data stream analysis, anomaly detection and prediction.
Head of Operations
Angel is the Head of Operations of Altelium. He was previously Head of Regional Supply Chain Operations as well as responsible for supply chain operations and continuous improvement at Fung Group in Hong Kong. Also, Angel was a lead buyer and sourcing coordinator at Talgo and earlier at Robert Bosch. He holds a Master of Engineering in Operations Management from MIT and an MBA from Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, India.
Business Development Manager
Alex is Altelium’s business development manager with over twenty years’ transport industry experience spanning EV fleets, local public transport networks and transnational logistics. Alex implemented Gatwick Airports’ electric Tesla taxi trial which completed 1.5 million miles in 3 years with 5 vehicles. At British consultancy, Sustainable Environment Ltd, Alex was instrumental in the development of the Small Vehicle Transport System (SVTS), an alternative public transport model which gave rise to both a US-based shared passenger service run by a major vehicle manufacturer and a radical overhaul of the NHS non-urgent patient transport service. Alex helped develop UK Social Enterprise policy and ran a major EU project with Poland and Tuscany. Alex has a business degree from the University of Buckingham.
Alana is Altelium’s laboratory battery expert, engaged in systematically testing and modelling the aging process (and associated risks) of commercial Lithium-ion batteries. With a PHD in electrochemistry from Sao Paolo University in Brazil, Alana gained her masters degree from Sao Carlos University, a first degree in chemistry from Mato Grosso University in Brazil and has also studied at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. She has over eight years hands-on experience in electrochemical systems with relevance for energy conversion and storage, and oversees a laboratory of lithium ion batteries based at Lancaster University.
Lead Electrical Engineer
Mike is the Lead Electrical Engineer for Altelium. He is a chartered engineer and member of the IET with over 40 years industry experience leading teams in electrical and control and indication systems, most notably in the aerospace sector where he held specialist signatory approval. Since 2008 Mike has been a co-founder and director of Woodford Engineering Consultancy, specialising in quality approved engineering design, development and certification activities.
Lead Software Engineer
Kostas is Altelium’s Lead Software Engineer responsible for the day-to-day development and implementation of the software solutions including the development of the Altelium system infrastructure and processes. He has a first degree in computer science from the National and Kapodistrian University in Athens and a master’s in advanced informatics & Computing Systems from the University of Piraeus. In 2009 he co-founded MGCode and Coderust Ltd in UK in 2019 and has more than ten years’ experience in designing, developing, delivering, and supporting, line-of-business software solutions for a variety of international companies. He has held Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist status since 2012 and been a Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate since 2016.
Vas is the Software Architect at Altelium leading the design, development and implementation of the software solutions including the development of the Altelium system infrastructure and processes. With a joint bachelor’s/master’s degree in electrical & computer engineering at the National Technical University of Athens and an MBA from Cass Business School, London, he co-founded MGCode in 2009 and Coderust Ltd in UK in 2019 and is CEO and joint-managing director of both companies. Vas also holds Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist status and is a Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate. His extensive industry experience spans the informatics, electrical and computer engineering, banking, and financial sectors.
Pierre is Altelium’s System Architect, in charge of designing hardware and software systems, communications, and security across the organisation. He has a background in network and system administration (BSc Hons, CCNA) and specialised in cyber security (MSc, PhD candidate). A large part of his academic work focusses on cyber-physical systems including battery management systems, industrial control systems, and building automation and he has more than a decade of professional experience in positions such as network administrator, system administrator in a data centre, and software developer.
Jazz Kirkwood is Altelium’s Data Engineer, joining the organisation from NanoSUN, Lancaster, where she was part of the quality team achieving ISO9001 standards. With a research focus on Non-Linear Modelling of Oncolytic Virotherapies and a first-class mathematics degree from University of Dundee, Jazz employs her mathematical and modelling skills at Altelium supporting the integrated management system (IMS) and customer interface. Jazz collaborates with the team to enhance real life battery data with algorithms as part of Altelium’s advanced insurance and warranty services, alongside implementing big data tools and technologies to create solutions that will scale.
Buu is Altelium’s actuary. He holds a chief actuary (non-life with Lloyd’s) practising certificate and works across reserving, pricing, capital modelling and risk. He is managing director of Insight Risk Consulting Ltd and has held senior actuarial roles in the London market, including Group Chief Actuary of Omega Insurance Holdings. Buu started his career in consulting, qualifying as a general insurance actuary at PwC.
Country Manager for North America
Richard is Country Manager North America for CNC. After graduating from Oxford University, Richard read for the Bar but has since spent 40+ years working as broker and underwriter in the domestic and international insurance and reinsurance markets. He has held positions of Managing Director (Leslie and Godwin Marine Ltd) and Chairman (Aldgate Insurance Brokers), and retired as Managing Director of his own broking house (Xpertfunding Ltd) in 2015.
Hugh Bohling is a graduate of Cambridge University and Altelium’s legal director. He set up CityNet Law in 2006 and is a leading corporate lawyer for the insurance market with over 25 years’ experience. Hugh was previously a partner of the major international law firm, Eversheds. Hugh’s focus in practice is M&A corporate activity and investment in the London insurance/reinsurance market. The M&A activity is combined with specialised knowledge of commercial and regulatory arrangements in the London insurance market, both at Lloyd’s and in the company market, for UK and overseas underwriters, brokers and agencies.
Dr Denes Csala
Denes is a lecturer in Energy Storage System Dynamics. He is an expert in data science and machine-learning and has vast experience with interactive simulation/optimisation tools and data visualisation. At Lancaster University, he is also overseeing the development of artificial intelligence algorithms for the campus energy information system.
Professor Plamen Angelov
Plamen is a Professor in Intelligent Systems and Director of ‘LIRA’ Lancaster Intelligent, Robotic and Autonomous Systems centre. He is the Vice President of the International Neural Network Society and has extensive experience in the fields of real-time data stream analysis, anomaly detection and prediction.
Steve is a Chartered Engineer who has had a long and varied career in the automotive, aerospace and more recently renewable energy sectors. He is an experienced project manager having spent 20 years working for BAE Systems in various systems engineering and project management roles on the Eurofighter Typhoon project.
Dr Angelos K Marnerides
Angelos is an Assistant Professor of computer networking at the School of Computing and Communications at Lancaster University, having gained his PhD there. His specialisation is network security and resilience including large scale IoT botnet malware detection; internet backbone traffic characterisation and IoT device security (protocols and cryptography). He is also involved in vehicle-to-grid networks and vehicular telematics. He has published widely on internet traffic characterisation, anomaly detection in datacentres and malware detection in cloud computing infrastructures. He has also been an academic member of the GCHQ approved Security Lancaster Institute.
Portfolio Manager (Extended Warranty) for Spain, Portugal and Italy
Dani became CNC Asset’s portfolio manager for Spain, Portugal and Italy in 2016 following a wide and varied successful international insurance career. Dani brings to CNC technical renewables insurance experience from Spain which was one of the earliest countries to embrace renewables. He also brings an international legal insurance knowledge. From the London market on Willis’ graduate course, to Switzerland for insurance and risk management at Alstom Power, to Spain in 2002 where he set up Willis Barcelona’s Energy Department with special responsibility for contingency and efficacy risks, and for M&A. Dani also set up Tecnirisk, an independent wholesale broker placing domestic Spanish business into the international insurance markets.
Noel is an experienced engineer with extensive knowledge in waste-to-energy, overseeing projects from conception to completion. He is a forensic engineer with a proven record acting for insurers and of introducing innovative new systems which exceed performance expectations. He has a strong strategic vision for successfully delivering complex multi-track and multi-national projects including those for the UK Government, the health sector and private initiatives.
Jonathan Davis MBE LLB (Hons) FCIS
Head of Secretariat
Jonathan joined our sister company, CNC Asset Ltd, in 2016 as Head of Secretariat with over 20 years’ professional administrative experience. A graduate of both Exeter and Buckingham Universities and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he commanded the British Army’s largest administrative unit. Jonathan was awarded an MBE for his work on military operations in Iraq where he mentored Basra Provincial Council through the first genuinely democratic elections in living memory. Jonathan was also finance director of a substantial UK based charity and chairman of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries for Northern Ireland. He has also set up trading companies in specialist areas in Hong Kong, run his own successful consultancy and recently spent several years overseeing the disposal, in Afghanistan, of surplus stores and equipment from the Afghanistan conflict to both local and worldwide buyers.
Jane is the product manager for Altelium’s insurtech system, which includes responsibility for the development and administration of the platform. She also the project management lead for the wider business. Jane was previously a client relationship manager at an insurance broker providing advice on insurance policy coverage, pricing and identifying opportunities for revenue growth. Prior to this she was project manager for an IT business. Jane has obtained the Cert CII from the Chartered Insurance Institute, is Prince2 qualified and has a degree in Management.
Michaela is CNC Asset’s Office Manager, responsible for the efficient operation of the office. She assists our team of professionals dedicated to delivering a first-class service. She is the point of first response for incoming enquiries and manages policy renewal, liaising between company, clients and insurers. She provides the claims team with relevant data to assist in claims processing. Michaela’s working background is in operational administration and she has the CII Level 2 Award for the Foundation Insurance Test (QCF).
Mike is the claims manager at CNC Asset working on the renewable energy insurance and warranty claims. He is responsible for handling the claims from notification through to settlement, dealing directly with the policyholders and liaising with the insurers. Mike previously worked for Hogg Robinson Gardner Mountain brokers and was a senior claims handler at CIS General Insurance for eleven years. He has worked and travelled extensively abroad, including running a successful business as the owner and operator of a resort in Vietnam for nine years.
Head of Corporate Communications
Nicky heads up our corporate communications, and is also a director of Twelve PR. She began her career in media and communications at Haymarket Publishing and worked at the Guardian and Observer for nine years before co-founding the award winning agency, Twelve. Nicky is a full member of the Market Research Society (MRS) and the Public Relations and Communication Association (PRCA).
Jess Friend Bartlett
Stakeholder Media Relations
Jess directs all stakeholder media relations for Altelium. She has deep experience of the automotive and B2B market, launching her career with the behaviour change programme ‘How’s my Driving’ now featured across the Tesco HGV fleet and was Awarded Outstanding Young Communicator of the Year by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) in 2016. Also working at Twelve PR, Jess directs media relations across traditional and digital channels for Altelium.
